Quick remembrances of Horses
Hoovers had a white horse or pony. wonder if Steve remembers the name: was it "Buttons?"(ed.note:it was) Let me know if I am correct.(ed.note:you were) They brought the horse up to grandma's, i think in the summer of 64. However, i remember being given a ride the previous Christmas night in 63 on the race track where it was boarded. Except i dug my heels in to his ribs (not Steve, the horse!) and he reared up and did a hi-ho silver on me. uncle Ben had to coach me and calm him down. He had to calm me down too.
Anyway, in summer 64 the horse was kept both at Roy Hoover's i think, and at Grandma Allen's. in a later year we tried to sell hay by cutting up the tall grass near Paul Noss's bran drive and stacking it. we made a gigantic sign out of a small napkin and held it up to traffic on Old 27. Of course , people would honk their horns thinking we had a dirty message for them or something like honk if
horny or something. they couldn't see it. we even held up the "hay" as they went by. they thought we had some grass for sale alright.
Pat Mickle once got kicked in the ribs by a horse, thus ending his football career temporarily. Think he broke two ribs. He gave up his dream of big time wrestling (hahaha). I've never seen a real horse in big time wrestling, but some of those guys come close in size.
Marilyn Allen, Olive and Delmar Allen's daughter, had a horse named Jingles and occasionally would ride it to Grandma's house from Dover, a couple of miles. You could feed the horse carrots or sugar and he was one happy dude. He lived to be around 20+. Marilyn was quite a rider an participated in many horse contests, and won a few I understand. I don't know if she rode Jingles in those but I bet she did.
