"This story was one of my Dad's favorites. You know he and Vane Mickle were close - they were golf buddies on weekends. I suspect that Vane was more like a brother to him than his own brothers.
Story:
Paul and Vane were out golfing in the late 70's or around 1980. Before Vane had his stroke in late '81 of course.
First hole at the Clare golf course just north of Margaret Allen's (Grandma's, Floyd's) old place. There is a hill that goes up and over then the green at the bottom of the other side of the hill. Paul hits his ball up a ridge on the left, on top of the hill. Vane hit his straight but to the bottom of the near side of the hill. He ca not see the green. Paul hits his ball to left of the green or something.
Vane asks Paul to spot his ball before he hits it since he can not see the green or the ball over the hill. Vane hits his ball.
"Where did it go?" Vane asks.
Paul says: "I don't know, it disappeared behind a tree."
"expletive deleted!" says Vane.
They spend five minutes searching for it. Vane is about to drop a new ball when Paul wanders over to the pin (hole) and exclaims "Here it is!It's right in the hole. You got a birdie!"
Vane rushes over to see, and looks at Paul.
Vane tries to get mad at Paul but can't and starts laughing.
"You knew it all the time, you dirty so and so..."
This is the kind of stuff I love to remember about those guys. They were always pulling gags on each other."
