my last 6 months at old 27...

below are some highlights of my last 6 months in clare . i've been writing these 2-3 line notes for awhile , thinking that i'd flesh them out at a later date...hah ! real life has been a "beach" for quite some time , and i wanted to get these 40 year old memories out there before they became 42 or 43 year old memories . so here they are . i may at some future date expand on them . or not...

'69,clare mi. 40 years ago

getting laughed at as i got on the bus the first couple of weeks back from germany . reason ? i was wearing white pants . which were all the rage in school in germany, not so much in clare . the kids thought i was wearing the same pair of pants all the time . they didn't know (or care) that i had about 7 pairs of them . mom got me some different pants shortly afterwards...

riding the bus home from school in clare . holly (daughter of the owner of twin elms) wants to try on my ring . i hand it to her...she wears it all the way home . i get panicked as we approach old 27 . i practically beg her to return it . she did...what an idiot i was...

because they had no room for me in a regular class for last period at c.h.s. , they put me in a remedial reading class . hahahaha...this for a guy who started reading at 4 , and who was a voracious reader. needless to say, i blew through the s.r.a reading materials , starting at the very bottom level . in less than a month i had finished all the reading , all the way through the colors , and aced all the reading comprehension tests . there were people in there older than me who couldn't get past 4 grade level . anyway the teacher , who hadn't been told i was being placed there just for someplace to be that period , gave me an "f" because he thought i was cheating . mom came to the school and raised holy hell , in that imitable allen girl fashion . then they let me read whatever i wanted . i wanted to tutor some of the other kids , but wasn't allowed to so as not to mess up the teachers plan . which consisted entirely of him sitting at his desk while all the students "read"...

falling into the "bad" crowd who hung out in the morning behind a cemetery building , smoking cigarettes (a pattern i followed the rest of my school daze)...

riding bikes with my best friend bob showers . going over to the jump and nearly killing myself on one landing . i believe it was the last one i did there...

playing guitar in the spring choir program . had to learn to play "yesterday" . jon , the original picker had gotten suspended...for smoking . i was petrified at the performance . i faced the choir so thank goodness my back was mostly to the audience . otherwise i prolly wouldn't have gotten through the ordeal...

but soon after got cast in the spring play,"finian's rainbow" . i loved doing that , lots of rehearsal time...

Hey, great stuff, I knew you had it in you! Interesting, Tammy and I were just reminicsing and discussing those s.r.a. things the other night. remember them well. Personally, I think you were probably ahead of your time with the white pants. I remember you once in white pants, striped (vertical) shirt and mod hat. But I don't think the mod hat was anything lasting. Kind of looked like Tom's captain hat a little. So let me get this straight..they needed a non smoker to play the axe...

knew i had what in me?.i had been doing those sra things since 1st or 2nd grade.they were easy...for me.at that time i thought everybody could read like me,and was surprised that most other kids couldn't.
as far as being ahead of my time, thats the last time i had any fashion sense.i remember the hat,it went with my granny glasses...and my nehru shirt.and as far as needing a nonsmoker to play the axe, that wasn't it...they just needed one who hadn't been caught smoking and gotten himself suspended...

Yes, I was actually going to mention I do remember the granny glasses as well. I remember you being a quick reader, blazed through comic books faster than a speeding bullet.

That was a good one, Dan. "Words of Fury," eh? Steve would have had it made in the fast read/memorize your lines department as an actor. Maybe Dan and I should have wrote the stuff (sand up comedy)and Steve perform it....(oh, God, what a disaster that would be....hahaha.. while we are typing away and argueing what is funny, Steve will have already delivered the lines and looking at his watch yelling "when the hell is lunch?").

Finian's Rainbow? That sounds familiar. You remember what that was about? I was in Alice in Wonderland once. Played Twiddle Dee..Had to wear a beanie, shorts and suspenders!
