saturday evenings with mr. t.

just finished listening to prarie home companion and that reminded me to start posting these stories.they are culled from our emails over the last few years so they may seem rather abrupt in places but oh well. and by posting these for him it's almost like i'm not here all by myself.
so,without further ado, ladies and gentlemen i bring you "saturday evenings with mr. t."
--------------------

I remember in 1969 in late Spring at Grandma Allen's, before you left.......

Your mom took us all over to your Grandfather's (Roy Hoover) to catch chickens at the guy's house across the street. His neighbor across the road had died and said Roy could have 'em. So we were to go on a chicken safari (that's a song isn't it? "Come on babywait and see, come on a chicken safari with me..." by the Farm Boys) . Danand i didn't now anything about farming let alone catching chickens. i don't think you and Cindy did either. But your mom sure did! Grab 'em by the legs upside down and stuff them in a burlap bag.

On our way down the long driveway, we saw a light left on in the attic. I said "hey, look at that, there's someone up there!" Roy went back and got his shot gun (I think he did it to be dramatic for the kids, I think he knew there was no one up there HAHA). We approached the house and he went up the stairs a little and yelled "Hey you up there, come down out of there!" or something similar. He went up and found no one there. He came back down and said the relatives must have been there and left the light on.

Catching chickens had to be done in the dark! Sunset came and went and we found ourselves in the chicken coop in total darkness. You and Roy and your mom did all the work while Cindy and Dan and I panicked. It was hilarious . We got 'em all. But the most important thing I got out of it was a lifetime memory and a story to tell my kids! I have told them this story a few times.
