john lennon , 1940 - 1980

from his wikipedia page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Lennon

John Winston Lennon, MBE (9 October 19408 December 1980), was an English songwriter, singer, musician, graphic artist, author and peace activist who gained worldwide fame as one of the founders of The Beatles. Lennon and Paul McCartney formed a critically acclaimed and commercially successful partnership writing songs for The Beatles and other artists.[1] Lennon, with his cynical edge and knack for introspection, and McCartney, with his storytelling optimism and gift for melody, complemented each other.[2] In his solo career, Lennon wrote and recorded songs such as "Imagine" and "Give Peace a Chance".
Lennon revealed his rebellious nature and irreverent wit on television, in films such as A Hard Day's Night (1964), in books such as In His Own Write, and in press conferences and interviews. He channelled his fame and penchant for controversy into his work as a peace activist, artist, and author.
He had two sons, Julian, with his first wife Cynthia, and Sean, with his second wife, avant-garde artist Yoko Ono. Lennon was murdered by Mark David Chapman in New York City on 8 December 1980 as he and Ono returned home from a recording session.
In 2002, respondents to a BBC poll on the 100 Greatest Britons voted Lennon into eighth place. In 2004, Rolling Stone ranked Lennon number 38 on their list of "The Immortals: The Fifty Greatest Artists of All Time"[3][4] and ranked The Beatles at number 1.

the beatles , and john specifically , were probably the biggest musical influences in my life (no pun intended) and music just hasn't been the same since dec. 8 , 1980

I remember as well. Believe it or not that was like the straw that broke the camels back so to speak, for me. After most of my pop icon heroes dying (Hendrix,Bruce Lee, Lennon)it was a catalyst for me to do my own thing, follow my heart, ya know. That was it, when John got shot and died. Life is too short. It was quite depressing for a lot of people, and still is. I was glad to get a copy of the last "Double Fantasy album. It was bitter sweet.

I remember coming out the Cali and hearing some songs from that album playing on the radio as we were driving somewhere and talking about that a little, cause it was still fresh, ya know in '81. around '89 I think it was, i went to Queens N.Y. to visit my friend. We drove into Manhattan and I actually walked right past Yoko on the street. She was walking with some guy I don't know who. I said hey there's Yoko. My buddy acknowledged that it was her and kind of laughed it off like no big deal because they see celebs all the time, ya know. But even though not a big fan of hers, I thought it was kind of surprising, or,sort of different, or unexpected, or something seeing John Lennon's wife on the street, having grown up with all that beatlemania and being a fan of John's etc. And then we just kind of forgot about it and changed the subject. I also thought after what happened she wouldn't be so non chalant about being in public....anyway it was not that big of a deal, but something you don't see everyday when your from the midwest.
