in the comments of the last post , we got involved (kinda sorta) in a discussion of a particular incident . i need a little help with some of the details . memory circuits being what they are , and mine being as bad as most , i'm having just a hazy recollection of that whole afternoon/evening . so i would like to ask the three of you who were there to please write down , in as much detail as possible , your memories of the chicken caper. i know tom and dan have put some in those comments , but i am hoping to gather more details . keeping in mind that it was 40 years ago i don't hope to reconstruct the whole thing , but would like to flesh it out a bit . if this works out as i hope it may, then once a week or so i can put up a post about some particular incident/thing from our glory days , and then everyone can add their two cents worth.
i'm aware that that is what we've been doing for almost two years anyway, but i would like to open it up to all of us . so anything that anyone of us wants to discuss and remember , just send me an email or leave a comment and i'll put it up .
thanx...

I beleive it was around the first week in May 1969. i remember Theos and Vane's old Grundig HI FI (which they later gave to me) was in the living room where the wall is between the front door and the front window, and the green chair had been moved. HI FI was probably there for you guys. A year later they gave it to me.
Anyway your mom said Roy needed help catching some chickens from his neighbor Smith across the road and down the long driveway. (I never knew name until you mentioned it)because the neighbor had died and had left the chickens to Roy. We got there and talked for a few minutes at ROy's, then he got a flashlight as it was dusk and getting darker. We walked across the road and started down the long droveway, when, I opened my big mouth (I am sure it was me!) and pointed out that a light was on upstairs in the window, maybe somebody was there. Roy and Joann thought someone merely lef tit on going through the man's things. I or someone said what if it's a burglar. Roy pondered this and then asked us to wait there and went back and got his gun. HAHAHa. I'll never know for sure, but I think he did it on purpose just to make an adventure out of it for us kids. Continued later.
I don't know what year it was, Tom's probabaly correct. All I know is the whole incident created for me, a certain eerie feeling because I was so young and it was dark, in the middle of nowhere. The ambeance or general feeling of fear of the unknown was both scary and exhilerating at the same time. I especially recall the long drive down the country road and the long dirt driveway approaching the house. When the comment was made about how maybe someone was upstairs in the house, when in fact there was not supposed to be, sent a shiver up my spine, and I do indeed remember that your Grampa Hoover had gotten a gun. I thought at the time it was a shotgun, but not certain. Which got my adrenaline burger going even more becuase I was thinking, why would an adult, especially who knew this man who lived there, do that unless he thought maybe this was serious. Then the mystery seemed to continue to unfold when it was discovered that there where a few dead chickens scatterd about the east side of the house there. Once it was agreed that there was probably no prowler upstairs (after watching that upstairs lighted room a little, and i'm not sure if your grampa made a phone call from his house or what) It lightened the mood a little. However, for me anyway...not too thrilled about WHAT may have killed those chickens...was it a fox? A dog? A bear? Perhaps a werewolf had been there, or some sick ritual had taken place...(Too much Dark Shadows..thanks alot for introducing me to that Steve & Cyndi) Anyway I guess maybe it was said by your grampa the dog, or a dog had gotten em. And the fun began with Roy telling us to be careful how we tried to pick the chickens up that were there. I think anyone who caught em was putting them in a burlap bag, but not sure maybe just a coop. Followed by a fun ride back to gramma's. I felt safer once back there but still wanted to get back inside. Something about being way in the middle of the country at night really gets to a kid. Ever try walking down Beaverton after dark? You may be attacked by some weird animal or step into a hole which leads to another universe! AHHHHH!!!!....
I slightly remember some dead chickens. not sure but I think Roy mentioned an animal, probably someone's "darn dogs," got em. Roy brought a shot gun i think, and we actually followed him inside to the stairway to the attic. He went up a few steps and yelled up, "Anyone there?!..If you're up there ya better come out, I got a shot gun!..." (something like that anyway. nobody came down, and if I was up there I wouldn't either.
So little brother was scared eh? I could do the big brother "naner naner" thing, but since you know karate now I'll pass. But it was a great "last" adventure for the 4 cousins to have and is worthy of a Tom Sawyer type book. Wish I could compile all these things, exaggerate 'em and make a million bucks off a book. Then I'd buy me some chickens and a cee-ment pond.........find me an Ellie May....
Now I remember just a little more. Sort of a side note. Theo and Vane's HI-Fi, parked in grandma's living room - That day or that weekend we were kinda sittin around vegetatin'(probably the next day Sunday). I had a new copy of Magical Mystery Tour and played it on that Hi-Fi. Either we went home to Lansing after that or over to Roy's after dinner. Also, I don't think your dad was there, probaly making arrngements out in California.
Oops, that previous one was Tom's comments.
thanx guys, this is exactly what i was looking for.
