saturday night nostalgia...

this is from Grandma'a allen's Linen closet . My mom (or/and I) saved it from loss when emptying out her house in 1986 during the yard sale . Mom kept it for years , no particular reason , and I decided to keep it from oblivion or trash barrel . there is one piece missing bottom left corner ...

I wish I would have kept the "States puzzle, the Hawiann puzzle, and a couple of others we had a little kids. Dan had a Flintstones' Dino puzzle I think. Of course, I wish we could have kept a lot more . some things we never saw again, other stuff got thrown out. But life goes on.

Mr. T. said -Thanks for posting. "States puzzle" refers to a puzzle of all the states of the United States. The Hawaian Puzzle was a Hawaiin guy with a surfboard which was somewhat challenging to put together and the surface of some of the pieces were peeling off. I think those puzzles were Kathy and Pat's. If you all can think of any other items, puzzles or books you have or remember, be sure to share them for the blog. It's fun. Also I failed to mention I have a book someone gave Grandma to read around 1978 (which I still read periodically) "The 100 Most Influential People in history" (or something like that). I believe Dorothy Thompson gave it to her but I may be wrong. (They have updated versions of it in book stores over the years). I'll have to take a photo of it.

Yeah once we were done playin with those puzzles,we were off and running creating all kinds of other fun and mischief! But i do remember some of those. And also there was a checker board game, ouji board (didn't use that very often) and of course the other stuff for when we were littler like I remember a hammer and peg (simulating nails i guess) Also a couple kalidiscopes we would look at. I remember our own stuff we would bring up, besides comic books, like a kenner viewmaster slide show thing. One of you guys don't remember but i thought we made our own little 3 hole golf course outside (remember, there were some golf clubs in the garage) burying tin cans for holes and seeing if we could chip shot them. I remember trying to fly a kite up there from the yard, that one didn't go so good so finally going across to the park where the backstop used to be for more room. And of course making movies up there with you guys was always fun! We were always foolin around doing somethin whether it was tinkering with and going through stuff in the garage - including as Steve said in that storage cabinet or roaming the park or the barn. Bummer when it rained though. Simpler times though - for sure...

Also was that gramm's handwriting on that puzzle about the "missing piece?" Looks like it...

dan,i remember the golf course.it was only natural for us,i mean what did our dads do when we were there?
the oujii board had been mine, wanted it for my b-day of christmas, can't recall which.i think we scared ourselves with it,so after a couple of sessions it stayed in the closet...
the thing that really strikes me is that we managed to take the limited resources that we had,and we had a blast.we had little television to watch during the day,and we could (almost) always play and amuse ourselves...

As i've said before, and we all have, those were some of the best days and simpler times. I'd love to be able to go back in time and live a few of those fun days....And yes that oujii board was a little scary. Other than that i really wasn't scared of anything up there, except maybe playing outside at night, i'd aviod certain areas like behind the garage etc. hahaha.

And of course, the time we went to that house at night across from your grampa's...I was chicken...hahaha. Wasn't that weird looking at that house on the video? I should've zoomed in on it...well next time i will i guess.

There is too much in memories to keep blogging here inder the puzzle. But I am not sure that is grandma's hamdwriting on the missing puzzle piece area or not. Speaking of golf courses, Uncle Vane and Pat had at one time
(1963?) put a makeshift golf pole and red flag out in Paul Nass's cow pasture to the west, over the fence, and would practice shooting toward the "pin." the grass was chewed down quite a bit although there were weeds popping up above the low grass. I remember Dad cracking up when we drove into the driveway and he saw it out there.
Maybe he thought Vane was worried about losing to him and Vane decided he'd better practice! But cheaply. haha.

I remember those kalaidescopes now! Slipped my mind; thanks Dan. And yes i remember our little 3-4 hole golf course we made, circa 1967. 1967 was a fun year up there. 1969 was the great chicken chase. I too was amazed at Aunt Joann's prowness with those darn critters-she knew hopw to bag 'em, piece of cake. I didn't catch any. I think Steve may have caught one. What about Cyndi?

you guys remember the big old tree with all the ants on ot ans the swing made out of rope and board? and a pole painted white, nailed to the tree baranch to stablize it? Remember putting up the new swing set after they had to cut down the old tree?

That last typing session was pretty bad wasn't it?

Wow, i actually do remember that tree swing, holy crap that was a long long time ago. I remember after a whil in the 70's when the newer swing set was rusting and no one playing on it so took it down. Even though i was to old to use it, i still was a little miffed that it wasn't there anymore. One of the makeshift golf holes was over there near the swing set. I didn't catch any chickens either but do remember a light being on up there so we thought someone could've been in the house and a few dead chikens in the yard that the dog or dogs had gotten at, or perhaps some other animal. I do remember aunt Joann doing the Rocky Balboa chicken chase really good too. I remember getting brief or a warning about how to pick them up so as not to get spurred. I guess that came from Roy Hoover.

Yep-he said pick 'em up by the middle of the legs so they can't peck ya or bite ya or spur ya. Hell, pick 'em up? I couldn't even catch 'em, and it was in the dark with a flashlight in the chicken coop. Us kids, we were a bunch of city slickers, what did we know? I bet Roy had a laugh over that, watching us city kids struggle with a simple farm chore, hahaha.
