Thanks for posting this and reminding us all. God bless grampa Allen. Think of it gang. Grama's husband and father of the 3 gals we all grew up with,(our own mom's)Wish I'd have been about to know him. But....he's in us for sure, he's a part of us.
Dad used to describe him well and had stories of him in his later years that I remembered being told to me when I was about 17. the time he jumped the fence when one of Paul Noss's bulls chased hom when fishing. How he built that house we all knew so well, with Dad and other's help, out of mostly scrap material. Mom's story of how he used to play cards in the army and send money home to his mother, later playing cards at the local corner store with the boys in Dover and bring home money, Grandma annoyed heplayed cards yet he would give her the money and say "Go buy the kids some shoes." The kids did not have shoes much of the time. He worked the roads depression. He worked during the war in the factory in Lansing. Tough old coot! I am sure he would have taught us all a thing or two, and wished he could have lived into his 90's to make sure that we learned. He once showed the girls, at separate times, how to check or change oil and a tires, for practical reasons. Mom once said, in those private moments to her, "Get an education. You will get a better job and live better life." I was told by others in Dover meetings, he had a sharp mathematical mind, that he would figure in his head for a long time, silently to himself and come up with the answer. I bet he would have gotten a higher education had it been more valued and the opportunity been available enough during his time. Wonder what his personality was like and what his voice sounded like --- I have always wondered and will never know. Too bad someone did not record his voice in the 40's and 50's on tape.
the one thing I do remember as a tot before he died, he was sitting in the living room of the Old 27 house in the evening, and handed me a piece of that pink candy. on home movies he is seen about in some, one with me as a tot dancing while he clapped. Dad told me the story of hw he (Dad) drove in the snow al the way up to either Saginaw or Bay City
9not sure which) to see him in the hospital because Loree was due with Dan anytime. He was asking Paul to get him out of the hookups (he had prostate cancer) but it was too late. A few days later he died. Obviously the cancer had mastasized (sp). It's strange that mom had passed away from cancer also, in the month of December, years later, near the same age
(68) as Floyd (71).
Sorry for the bad typing "worked the roads during the depression of the 1930's" it should have read, among some other typos..
