so,it's sunday morning...

wife and i have had kids and grandkids here this weekend .
two granddaughters and one grandson spent the night . luckily
the eldest granddaughter drives and has her own car , so she
will take care of delivering everyone home . as i was fixing them
their breakfast (pancakes,it's what they alway want . guess they
don't get any at home . or maybe mine just taste better...yeah,thats
the ticket) i was flashing back to sunday morning at grammas
house . and i found i couldn't remember what we usually
had for breakfast . or even who fixed it . that is kind of
disconcerting , not being able to remember something like
that . i figured it would come to me later ,pop into my head
like so many other memories do .nothing.zip.zero.nada.
was it bacon and eggs , or cereal , or oatmeal? or what ?
anybody have any idea ?

without overthinking this matter , i have to consider
that i may have passed the point of no return , memory wise .
and that makes me kind of sad . some things i just took
for granted i would remember till i passed on . apparently ,
thats not going to be the case .

on the other hand , i do still remember how we seemed
to feel by lunch . we knew we were going home , and
didn't want to . if the mickles were there , they usually
left first . then , after lunch the timlins would pull out , of
course only after we kids had put everything away that
we had dragged out and played with . after we had watched
them go down the driveway and hang a right onto old 27 ,
cindy and i would usually just hang, and mope until mid-
afternoon when our folks would start getting stuff together
to leave . not really sure why we were almost always
the last to leave , especially since we always lived the
farthest away .lifes little mysteries,chapter 37,484 ...

oh yeah , that feeling i mentioned ? i later learned that
that was called "being bummed out" ...

now that our grandkids are fixing to leave , i have a sense
of relief and sadness . and i wonder how gramma felt after
a weekend of her kids and grandkids hanging around .
speaking from personal experience i imagine she felt a small
sense of relief that the commotion was over . but i bet
she was delighted that we had been there , and more than a
little sad that we were gone . i think that is just how grandparents
roll ...

Well Steve, I mostly remember eating cereal - out of those little boxes that were called variety packs or snack packs, but there were times when we had bacon and eggs, and I think once in a great while pancakes. Gramma of course was always first to get up and that damn whistling tea pot would wake us. So as I remember if Tom & I were the only ones before others got up we'd just go for the cereal packs which was fine with us. And I too have often thought about how gramma felt after we all left, having to live alone and she didn't drive. She probably got right on the phone with Rose, Olive or Dorothy after we'd left.

Also I remember she sometimes had maple syrup to put on pancakes, that was from cornwell ranch area or something. Really good stuff.

Ditto here. Starting to forget things so I have you two to help put the pieces togther, and from different perpectives. Somewhereinbetween lies the truth ("Lies the truth," hahaha. An oxymoron). But yes it was cereal, or gramma's bacon and eggs and/or toast with jelly. she alwats got up before everyone else. in addition to that teapot (coffee pot?) there was the celebrated rattling of pots and pans for 30 minutes! we're sleeping on the couches etc and I swear to God she did it on purpose to wake us up while she was waiting for the teapot to finish, hahahahahhaa.

Oh yeah. I always liked the toast with the strawberry jam etc. Prolly cause back then we used real butter. I remember the cartons of milk in the fridge with Elsie the cow on the side. And Sunbeam bread with a pic of girl on the package, sometimes wonder bread too I think. The greenhouse had a certain smell that was relaxing to think about now. Then of course morning cigerettes would come out, if not sitting at the kitchen table, then perhaps outside on the other side of the garage....ahem!!!! And of course once in awhile we'd swipe a cookie before going out the back door. I can't even count the times I'd brace myself on the back step rails and swing and jump down the steps.

You know whats amusing, I don't know if you have Hungry Howies Pizza and Subs in Ca. But the décor in some of them around here is almost spot on to Gramma's kitchen tiles.

that all sounds right.strangely enough,it's the toast and jam that i have vague memories of.and no,we don't have howies out here,at least not in socal.and sad to say,if i didn't have pictures to look at i wouldn't even remember what grammas kitchen tiles looked like...

I didn't think of it either until I saw those pictures. Howies is a Michigan based franchise,i'll take a pic sometime.
