so,i see from the weather doodad on the right that the temp. in clare is currently 12 , with a high today of 15. i wish i could say that that fact triggered some fantastic memories . but that wouldn't be true for the most part . yeah, there was the fun factor , 'specially during the week , with our rapt attention to the radio, waiting for the school closures to be announced . but for the most part , for me anyway sleeping in the basement as i did , if it was 12 outside , it had to be 20 below down there . which did make it hard to get out of bed . i would lay there , listening carefully to the sounds from upstairs . after gramma and the folks had gotten up , and i heard that last flush of the toilet , i would spring into action . i'd fling back the covers , shivering immediatly, grab my robe and haul ass across the icerink we called the basement floor . up the steps i would go , as fast as i could . at the top of the stairs i made the left turn into the kitchen , barely pausing to mumble anything to gramma and anyone else sitting there . gramma would smile and chuckle (you guys know what i'm talkin' about) as i raced past her . i did a fast head count . everyone was accounted for...the bathroom was free ! wait...where was cyndi ? dammit , where was she ? why of course , in the bathroom . so i would turn around and force a smile..."goodmorning gramma...mom...dad . "and then stand there , trying not to do the i gotta pee dance . oh yeah...fond memories indeed . on the other hand , life was so much easier then for me . and the timing of my morning , er, ah business was one of the only decisions i got to make myself...ah,to be young again .

Hahaha. Whats-a-matter, you knew you could piss in the shower if need be, as long as you rinsed it out. Yeah what an atmosphere down there sleepin in the basement. Did that a few times, not as much as you though. That cement was cold, and contoured. It was fun playin down there, but sleeping was another thing. And that white chest of drawers smelled like cedar and ,or mothballs. Hey if cyndi and everyone else wanted to go for it after gramma, well...ya know....
Tom - ah yes the famous basement "shower." Believe it was built there so Grandpa could shower down before entering the rest of the house after a long day of Gardening or messing with greasy engines or what not. Don't recall when it was torn down, maybe around 1972 0r 3, and believe the raised cement platform was still there when we "left for good." funny how I can still picture that enire basement in my head and where everything was at different years. But I can't remember where I put my cell phone and keys. Hey, I always pee in the shower.........one big subliminal suggestion, a running shower.....
Really? I guess i don't remember the shower being torn out of there.Didn't the fuel oil tank give off a little warmth? Not sure. I do remember the tanker truck pulling in gramma's driveway and running a fuel oil hose through the basement window to re-fuel it though. I was thinking also how that basement stairs railing was flimsy and would have to stabilze it once in a while. While the outside porch rails were pretty solid (both front and back porch and steps) you could hang and swing out on the front porch rail and of course jump down the entire steps out back, using rail for support when neccessary. I remember gramma had a housekey hidden in that back porch entrance too.
well you two are basing your observations on spending the weekends down there.don't forget that we lived there day in and day out for six months on either side of 1968.and once one developes a "pattern",other people(adults) would notice things like not coming upstairs to use the bathroom, and would remark on same...and besides, whipping out the weinnie down there was like instant icecubes to the testicles,on many occasions causing them to almost dissapear comepletely.
Steve, I had forgotten you slept in the basement! Guess that makes sense since there were only 2 bedrooms. I got to sleep with Grandma and boy what a treat that was at times! Seeing false teeth in a bowl still freaks me out a little.
false teeth in a bowl,hahahahahaha
Yeah I remember gramma's false teeth in a bowl! HAHAHA! Gramma used to say,"Keep em as long as you can" (your own teeth that is)
Tom said - I hadn't seen the above comments as I hadn't read this in a week or so. This is proof we are still funny as hell together and I'm glad Cyndi out her two cents. I'm still laughing at the thought of false teeth in a bowl. Good thing you didn't find them in your soup......or in the shower......in the basement......
